HRC Municipal Equality Index
The Human Rights Commission’s Municipal Equality Index examines laws, policies, and services affecting LGBTQ+ people who live in the city.
For 2023, Myrtle Beach ranks as highest municipality in South Carolina.
Pride Proclaimations
Pride Proclaimations designate June as Pride Month for the city. In Horry County, two municipalities designated Pride Month in 2024.
A Pride Proclamation was voted down by the Horry County Commission in 2023.
Hate Intimidation Ordinance
In 2024, the City of Myrtle Beach passed a hate intimidation ordinance to deter crimes motivated by bias or hate against people in certain classes. Classes protected by the ordinance specifically included gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
South Carolina is one of only two states without a Hate Crime bill.
